Patient: John | Age 35
Like many people, I experienced a vast array of digestive symptoms my entire life. Frequent bouts of diarrhea and loose stools, coupled with intense bloating, were just part of my day-to-day life. Despite being mindful of my diet and leading an active lifestyle – I was a competitive boxer in college – I always thought, “Well, that just must be how my body is wired,” and put up with the symptoms.
Misdiagnosis and Missteps
About 11 years ago, I developed a burning and tingling sensation in my throat. Initially diagnosed as acid reflux, I was promptly put on Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs). Before the PPIs, the burning and tingling were incredibly uncomfortable, often making it hard to concentrate. The PPIs alleviated my symptoms, but over time, I realized they were merely masking the underlying cause. Moreover, the PPIs generated all sorts of new problems for my health. In my early 20s, juggling a new career, I sought quick fixes and didn’t delve deeper into the root cause.
COVID Complications
Fast forward to 2020, and like so many others, I contracted COVID-19 twice. After my second bout, my stomach bloating and throat burning symptoms went absolutely haywire – I thought I was going to lose my mind. By this time, the PPIs had no impact whatsoever. Worse yet, I lost my voice for several months, making my profession as a consultant nearly impossible.
It was at this point that I decided to take a much deeper look at my overall health. By then, I was on max dosage PPIs twice per day, statins to lower my cholesterol, and large doses of over-the-counter pain medications for upper back and neck pain. It felt like I was popping pills all the time. What I found was that these symptoms were all interrelated.
A Closer Look at My Health
I always attributed my back and neck pain to long working days sitting at a computer. “Sitting is the new smoking,” everyone says. For years, I made weekly visits to the chiropractor, which provided mild, temporary relief, and I underwent physical therapy when things got extra painful. Despite being relatively young and active, I could never find the right mattress or office chair – something always ached.
My cholesterol levels, particularly triglycerides, were off the charts despite not having a sweet tooth. It seemed like taking statins for the rest of my life was inevitable. On the digestive side of things, after recovering from my second bout of COVID, I was miserable – bloating, burning in the throat, and a lost voice. The first step was to rule out acid reflux via a very uncomfortable pH test. My ENT inserted a sensor through my nostril and into my throat to measure how much acid was reaching that part of my body.
During the test, I was instructed to eat normally – so I threw the book at it: red wine, pasta with red sauce, coffee, etc. To my surprise, my pH test came back completely negative for acid reflux. I had been taking PPIs all this time for reflux that wasn’t occurring. So, what now?
The Right Diagnosis: SIBO and Laryngeal Sensory Neuropathy
It was actually my allergist who put me on the right path, diagnosing me with laryngeal sensory neuropathy – essentially, my vagal nerve wasn’t operating properly, causing mucus production and irritation in my throat. A prescription for neuromodulators to calm the nerve worked like magic, and my voice returned almost immediately. However, this wasn’t a magic bullet. Neuromodulating medication can produce other issues like weight gain and brain fog, and it wasn’t something I wanted to be on long-term.
My gastroenterologist hypothesized that my symptoms of bloating and impact on the vagal nerve might be interrelated due to something called Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO). Inflammation in the gut can cause pressure on adjacent nerves and impact the body’s ability to absorb nutrients. Sure enough, I tested positive for Methane-dominant SIBO, which can be particularly tricky to treat with antibiotics, diet, and herbal products.
The Battle with C-Diff and Finding the Right Treatment
By this time, my gut biome was completely out of whack, and I contracted a horrible condition called Clostridium difficile (C-Diff), resulting in diarrhea 10+ times a day. This condition can be extremely dangerous if not treated. How could I have C-Diff as an otherwise healthy male in my early 30s? In my case, a minor sinus infection and a subsequent round of antibiotics compromised my gut biome, causing the C-Diff to proliferate.
Since I had a history of C-Diff, I was not an ideal candidate for antibiotic treatment. Instead, I worked with the naturopathic team at Aayu on an alternative approach using strong herbal supplements that act as natural antibiotics but are generally gentler on the gut biome. After an initial treatment, I felt so much better. My intense bloating subsided, and my motility greatly improved.
The Role of Vitamins and Minerals
During this time, working with the Aayu team, I also learned about how simple vitamins and minerals can have an incredible impact on overall health. Magnesium and B vitamins proved to be life-changing. However, I also learned that the quality of vitamins and your body’s ability to absorb them makes all the difference. This is where things got really interesting.
Diet Changes and New Symptoms
During my SIBO treatment, I underwent a highly restricted diet, cutting out most carbs, particularly wheat products. My digestion and inflammation improved rapidly, but I noticed new symptoms, including brain fog, fatigue, and neuropathy in my hands and feet. With diabetes ruled out via testing, the Aayu team started me on the path of treating nutritional deficiencies. Many wheat-based carbs we normally consume are fortified with vitamins, particularly B vitamins. Cutting back on carbs meant I wasn’t receiving these nutrients.
Discovering IV Therapy
By this time, I had tried several high-quality oral supplements to alleviate my symptoms with only minor success. I then tried IV therapy, and the results were absolutely staggering. Almost immediately, my neuropathy vanished, fatigue was gone, brain fog disappeared, and my energy level was restored. I had never felt so good in my adult life. My ability to concentrate was elevated, and my digestive system was the best it had ever been. The symptoms vanished.
Here’s what happened: my body was finally absorbing proper levels of magnesium, B vitamins, and other nutrients that it had been starved of for so long. That back and neck pain? Gone, thanks to the magnesium. Neuropathy and digestive issues? Gone, thanks to the B vitamins.
Life After Treatment
Other interesting things started to happen. My sleep quality improved significantly. Levels of anxiety or restlessness that I thought were “normal” vanished. Frequent urination and cold hands and feet were gone. Now that I’m off the PPIs, my cholesterol levels are completely normal, and I no longer need to take statins. Bad cholesterol levels are gone.
In my case, the clear takeaway was that my body had not been properly absorbing nutrients all this time. The medications I had been taking were simply masking what my body truly needed. Our bodies are resilient and want to perform properly, but they need the right nutritional values to do so – and not everyone can absorb nutrients at optimal levels.
Having patience and seeking the right care are critical. In my journey, only a handful of medical and naturopathic practitioners took the time to hear my story and work together to find the right treatment. For this, I am extremely grateful to the Aayu team for guiding me towards the proper treatment for a variety of symptoms that I otherwise would have struggled with for the rest of my life.
